At Rivendell, we believe that education is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Instead of the traditional age-graded system, our school utilizes learning cohorts—small, multi-age groups of students progressing together based on skill, mastery, and developmental readiness. This model allows us to cultivate a rich learning environment where each child is seen, known, and encouraged to flourish at their own pace.
We desire to revolutionize the way we think about learning, and reject the idea that “covering” material is best practice. Rather, we aim for mastery-based learning. All tests and quizzes are viewed as formative assessments and opportunities for teachers to adjust instruction to make sure all students are mastering the concepts we teach.
Wonder & Discovery
We believe the early years are a time of wonder, play, and discovery—a bridge between preschool and formal schooling. Our Primary Prep program aims to nurture a love of learning while laying a strong foundation for academic success. This cohort provides a gentle yet structured environment where children explore the world through hands-on activities, stories, and play.
Reading & Writing
Giving students a strong foundation in reading and writing will impact their education for years to come. Using the Pinwheels Program from Rooted in Language, we teach with fun and engaging activities to develop the four modes of learning: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. All of our instruction incorporates research-based methods that allow us to observe each child's development, helping identify potential learning struggles early so that every student can thrive.
Some of our learning cohorts are at or near capacity, but we still have openings in many age ranges, including our Primary Prep cohort for young learners (roughly kindergarten age). Apply today to explore whether Rivendell is the right fit for your family!
